Nagarik Mancha 1989-2014 / Nagarik Mancha, an independent, autonomous citizen's initiative and a social action group, is neither affiliated nor aligned to any political party and does not accept funds from fund giving agencies.

Ongoing and Forth Coming Activities

  1. Acting as a civil society support group to citizen and worker, individuals and collectives, in legal matters relating to labour and environment, and offering suggestions and guidance to their course of actions, on a day-to-day basis.
  2. Working with about 50 organisations from the unorganised sector and marginal population from the various districts of West Bengal, who have come together under the banner of Sramajibi Adhikar Jatra. These collectives are not affiliated to any political party but yet are involved in movements for the rights of the toiling people, artisans and workers in various trades. Activities include organising a 30000-strong rally just before the last Assembly Elections, and formulating of demands from the margins.
    Similarly, Nagarik Mancha is an active partner of ‘SABUJ MANCHA, a platform for environment-conscious people and organizations across West Bengal and also ‘ADIVASI BANABASI ADHIKAAR MANCHA.
  3. Solidarity and support activities of the local inhabitants of Bardhaman and Bankura etc. who reside in the vicinity of Sponge iron units, which are devastating their lives and livelihoods.
  4. Demanding and pursuing for withdrawal of false police charges in the past, against initiators and activists of environmental movements.
  5. Planning for the forthcoming activities related to occupational health and safety of vulnerable workers in stone crushing industries.
  6. Planning for a detailed project on the state of urban transport system in and around Kolkata.
