Dear Friend,
Waste is one of the most important concerns for environment in the urban set ups. It is observed that several new initiatives have been taken to remove waste from many areas of the cities and towns of West Bengal. While appreciating such efforts, Sabuj Mancha notes with serious concern that appropriate waste management is not taking place in most of the cases. Dumping of waste remains the major practice thereby threatening our water bodies, wetlands, rivers, ground water and environment of the fringe villages.Processing of waste has become a rare event. Plastic and thermocol waste has become a menace for drainage systems. Bio-medical waste is often being found in municipal garbage. Waste pickers are still working in debris in unhygienic condition with life risk to earn their livelihood.
There are host of rules, directions and authorities to tackle the waste problem. Corporations,Municipalities and Panchayet Raj Institutions are being empowered and funded for bringing solutions to this vast problem. Unfortunately expected results have not been achieved.
To discuss the problems and possible solutions Sabuj Mancha is organizing a Citizens’ Meet from 11 AM to 5 PM on 21st October at Swami Vivekananda Conference Hall in Moulali Yuva Kendra. Authorities from the state government, WBPCB, KMC and other Corporations and Municipalities, environmental experts and activists and concerned citizens will take part in the Meet.
You are cordially invited to be present and take active part in the meet.
With regards,
Naba Dutta
